Huscarls hillside camp

We went camping with the Huscarls on the weekend and to be perfectly honest I didn’t have much fun. I don’t mind roughing it a bit but I object very strongly to not having any flat ground to sleep on – sliding feet first off my bed multiple times through the night does not make me happy. There were other problems too but I don’t really feel like going into them here. Suffice to say I’ve had better weekends. Which isn’t to say there was nothing good about the weekend. The kids certainly had fun. The weather was good. Clara … Continue reading Huscarls hillside camp

Thursday night was the only slip up last week, KFC for the second week in a row. I call that progress 😛 The apple and rhubarb crumble on Tuesday was awesome if I do say so myself, definitely make that again some time. Di and Bren came over on Friday night so I ended up cooking chicken burritos as well as tacos, then we watched Stargate: Continuum, was good 🙂 MondaySteak, jacket potato and grilled vegFruit & yoghurtTuesdayCorned beef, onion sauce and steamed vegIce cream & fruitWednesdayBBQ chicken, prawns, salad & bread rollsCrepes – lemon and sugar for me, maple … Continue reading Menu plan 11 Aug 08

Vegan Indulgence

I received a parcel in the mail this afternoon. Inside it was this: My very lovely friend Leigh Drew (aka ZB ) has had her first cookbook published. Leigh is an awesome cook, she is creative and adventurous and her enthusiasm for great food is contagious. When she talks about her cooking you can’t help but be excited with her. This little book is packed full of taste-bud tempting treats and each recipe is illustrated with gorgeous photographs, makes you hungry just reading it 🙂 I was lucky enough to be involved in some of the taste testing of these … Continue reading Vegan Indulgence

Last week would have gone a lot smoother if I’d managed to plan the shopping as well as our meals. I was still on the uphill stretch from being sick (today is the first time I’ve felt like I had any energy) and I couldn’t get my head around more than one day at a time. By Thursday night I’d dropped the culinary bundle completely, we had KFC for dinner *sigh*, then on Friday we had pizza (not homemade). On Saturday I bought Cornish Pasties and sausage rolls (I figured the kids weren’t going to go for the pasties) and … Continue reading Menu plan 4 Aug 08

Chicken and pumpkin risotto

I have cooked risotto once before but if I remember rightly I didn’t have half the things I needed and between that, trying to keep it kid-friendly and trying to short cut the standing around stirring thing it just ended up being a total flop, no-one wanted to eat it. When I was doing the menu plan for this week I thought “stuff the kids, I’m cooking this for me” and, because doing anything as simple as following instructions in a book is just boring, my first successful risotto is in fact my own recipe. 500g butternut pumpkin, dicedolive oil … Continue reading Chicken and pumpkin risotto

Things I want to try cooking.

What we have here is a bunch of stuff that I’ve been wanting to try my hand at for, in most cases, a very long time. Perhaps if I list them here I might even make some of them eventually. Soft pretzels – because OMG YUM! Mozzarella Fresca – I think this would be such an awesome thing to do with the kids, beats going to a cheese factory to learn about cheese making. Beef jerky – there are lots of recipes around, many of them seem to be characterised by a certain vagueness with instructions such as “add some … Continue reading Things I want to try cooking.

The past week went pretty much according to plan. This week Adam is off to New Zealand for a couple of days and I always find having him away leaves me much less motivated to cook so it might be a little more challenging this week. Done with dieting

I’m not doing the Weight Watchers thing any more, haven’t been for quite some time now. I was getting nowhere, making myself miserable and ending up binge eating on a fairly regular basis. Since I stopped dieting (and make no mistake about it, Weight Watchers is a diet) my weight has stayed stable, my binging has drastically reduced (I still have the occasional episode if I’m feeling really down) and I’m feeling pretty much OK about myself. I had blood tests done a few weeks ago and all the numbers came back good except my cholesterol. Which isn’t particularly surprising … Continue reading Done with dieting
