Call for submissions

The eighth edition of the Down Under Feminist Carnival is being hosted by Stephanie (stephiepenguin). Submissions are due before New Year, Stephanie is particularly interested in posts around feminism and intersectionality, particularly race and/or ethnicity. All the guidelines are at the Carnival homepage, and the carnival submission form is at Blogcarnival. If you can’t access the form, you can use the Hoyden contact instead. Hoyden About Town also has a call out for nominations for Femmostroppo retrospective 2008 – the most memorable feminist posts of 2008. Continue reading Call for submissions

Someone should do something

Let me paint a picture for you. Your child is starting kindergarten next year. Perhaps this is your first child to be heading off to school, perhaps it’s your last, either way the kid is looking forward to it. You and your partner have got the school holiday child care juggling act all figured out and you’ve managed to arrange things so that you’ll be able to have the day off for the first day of term and one of you will be available to pick your child up each afternoon after school for at least the first week. After … Continue reading Someone should do something

Link-fest No. 6

Feel like reading something silly? There’s a new post up on yogabeans! A review of Deadwood on Heroine Content. Train your goldfish with a training kit from ThinkGeek. Ninja cat comes closer without moving PhysioProf and Dr Isis are engaged in a recipe war. I find it oddly compelling. The Vorkosigan Companion will be mine. My lovely friend Susan has a new blog featuring cats and vegan food porn for your reading pleasure. And lastly, The Rotund has managed to convince me that taking the kids to Disneyland/Disney World might not be a completely terrible idea. Caitlin will be ever … Continue reading Link-fest No. 6

Link-fest No.4

Another random collection of stuff to read. The August edition of the Down Under Feminists Carnival is up at Audrey and the Bad Apples. One of the reasons I’m not watching the Olympics (or watching very little anyway): Lauredhel at Hoyden About Town posts on women athletes’ uniforms. The 2008 Hugo Awards results have been announced. Check out Tor.com, there’s short stories, news and a community to join. There’s a new Serenity comic on-line at MySpace Dark Horse Presents. And finally, who would ever have imagined there were so many possible Zombie Rhymes? lilacsigil contributed one of my favourites: Who … Continue reading Link-fest No.4

More on the Hillsong thing

Further info on the Hillsong run “personal development course” – another article in the SMH, Hillsong accused of closet zealotry. What on earth possessed anyone to think that letting a religious group run a class for the kids who have explicitly opted out of any religious studies was a good idea? “The teacher’s federation representative for Cheltenham Girls High, Doug Williamson, said non-scripture students at the school were being invited to join the Shine program, where they were exposed to religious content.” At least in that case the parents were apparently informed that Hillsong was running the course and had … Continue reading More on the Hillsong thing

Hillsong helping girls “discover their value and created uniqueness”

This makes me feel physically ill: From the SMH – Hillsong hits schools with beauty gospel You know what? Even if you take away any religious connotations the mere fact that there is a course being taught IN SCHOOLS, purportedly to boost teenagers’ self-esteem, which includes teaching “a range of skills including how to put on make-up, do their hair and nails, and walk with books balanced on their heads” makes me furiously angry.
