Feel Good Friday

Feel Good Friday is a weekly meme hosted by The Girl Next Door Grows Up (click the button above to go visit her). This week Liz at Eternal Lizdom has stepped up to the mark to host while The Girl has a break. I’ve seen Liz and others post to the meme over past weeks, it’s a nice warm fuzzy idea and I could do with some warm fuzziness, so I’m joining in. I’m going with the list prompt – 5 things that made you really happy this week. 1. Our Yulefest holiday At the end of last week we … Continue reading Feel Good Friday

Sundays in My City

Hosted by Unknown Mami Last Sunday I wasn’t in a city, instead we had traveled back 1000 years and were in a pine forest near Armidale camping out for 4 nights with over 400 other people. I keep promising myself and others that I’ll produce the definitive post-holiday post but I still haven’t recovered enough for my brain to be up to the task, so you’re getting a pictorial teaser instead. Tom cooking quail Our tent, complete with replica viking queen-sized bed Battle lines Markets Bonfire on feast night The past is an awesome place to visit but I wouldn’t … Continue reading Sundays in My City

Pictorial fragments from the past week

Hosted by Mrs4444. This week’s Friday Fragments has, very conveniently, been put off till Saturday which means I didn’t have to be incredibly rude and spend part of Christmas Day hiding away behind the laptop in order to participate. Of course just because I didn’t have to have net time yesterday doesn’t mean I stayed completely away…. I’m so addicted. Head on over to Half-Past Kissin’ Time for more fragments from the festive season. **** Our camping trip to Fingal Bay last weekend kicked off to a great start with us stuck in a traffic jam on the freeway, we … Continue reading Pictorial fragments from the past week

The ghost of Christmas past

Once upon a time my Christmas day started with getting up as early as I thought I could get away with and seeing what was in the pillowslip on the end of my bed. I still have very clear memories of finding books and games in there. The books were my favourite presents. The pillowcase in question was this one. It was bought at a school fete I think, many many moons ago, it must be going on for 30 years old now, I still use it on my bed occasionally. My tiger used to spend most of the year … Continue reading The ghost of Christmas past

I’m really rather fond of this time of year

Here we are at the beginning of December, my house is strewn with Christmas decorations, the kids have decorated the tree, we have strings of lights ready to festoon the garden, I have all my special Christmas candles out, the Advent calendar is hanging by the dining table, there’s Christmas music loaded up on the iPod and I’ve started my annual re-read of Connie Willis’ Miracle and Other Christmas Stories. Yes, I’m an atheist celebrating a pagan mid-winter festival co-opted by the Christian church to commemorate the birth of a man who was was almost certainly not born on the … Continue reading I’m really rather fond of this time of year

Beorgwic was…wet

We left home rather later than we had intended for our trip to Beorgwic, the annual event hosted by the Ancient Arts Fellowship at the Danelaw property in the Southern Highlands. As we drove south I tweeted my fear that we would be putting the tent up in the rain, what I didn’t quite anticipate was that it would also be be dark. Pitch black dark. We put the tent up in the rain and freezing cold by torchlight. I am so very glad that putting up a geteld is incredibly quick. (Many thanks to Talisien of Blue Draco for … Continue reading Beorgwic was…wet

Cruickshanks Cottage Farmstay

After driving to Brisbane in one day and spending 2 days wearing ourselves and the kids out at the Abbey festival we weren’t too keen to drive straight back to Sydney. So it’s a good thing we’d arranged to stop off for a 3 night farm stay holiday near Armidale on the way home. We arrived at the Cottage at Cruickshanks at dusk on Monday (Adam and were very glad to find our hosts Anne and Mike had the wood burning combustion heater going and the cottage nice and warm for us. Anne left us to get settled in with … Continue reading Cruickshanks Cottage Farmstay

Holiday snippets

We’ve just got back from a trip up to Brisbane for Abbey Medieval Festival and then back via Armidale where we stayed for a few days at Cruickshanks Cottage. While we were away the following things happened: Adam took up spinning. Tom finally got his own back-strap weaving kit (he’s been waiting a whole year). I finished reading The Handmaid’s Tale and was somewhat underwhelmed. I re-read Native Tongue 3 just in case it wasn’t as bad as I remembered. It was, if not worse. We acquired a pleasing collection of stuff to add to our re-enactment gear. Tom got … Continue reading Holiday snippets
