Adam made me an arm guard for archery, since he made it I’ve only hit myself with the string once, no more huge dramatic bruises for me! I’ve been doing some more tablet weaving, I’m still experimenting with patterns and I’m kind of wishing that the 5.8m batch was a bit more interesting. This took 2 weeks of picking it up when I was watching TV in the evenings. Two different patterns, the bottom one I’ve finished, the top one I’ve just started. Today I finally hauled all my jewellery making paraphernalia* out and made some necklaces. It’s been ages since I made anything new but there’s nothing like having a commitment to provide motivation. What we did at Winterfest

After a frantic week of shoe making, cloak hemming and costume tweaking we were more or less ready for our first whole family participation in a Huscarls camp. This was a paid gig for the group and our job was to come along, look authentic, talk to the public and have fun. I think we managed to meet all those criteria fairly well. Replica bead making

One of my justifications for the acquisition of my own glass bead making gear is that I will be able to make replica Anglo-Saxon/Viking beads to go with our, and other group members’, Huscarls costumes. This weekend I finally got around to making a couple of sets of replica-ish beads. The purple ones are for Caitlin and I do wonder if the encased flowers are historically accurate but the green and brown ones are, I think, pretty close to being HA. Too hot

I had to down tools 30 minutes early at my bead making class today. The warmer weather has been hard to take working over a blowtorch flame in an old building with no air-conditioning. We can’t even use fans as it’s just too frustrating to have the flame blowing all over the place as you work. So the last two Thursdays I’ve been battling fogged up safety glasses and sweat dripping off my nose as I made beads. Yuk. By the end of the class today I was feeling shaky and nauseous. I’ve got a bit of a thing for rocks – pretty ones, colourful ones, ones with interesting patterns – always have had. I have fond memories of visiting the Opal Museum at Kurrajong Heights as a child. We’d stop off there before heading up the hill to visit my Nanna (she of the Shakespeare obsession) and we’d be allowed to have a go at the lucky dip from which one got a small piece of rock with tiny veins of opal through it. There was something I was going to tell you….

…now, what was it? Errr, let’s see. I gained 0.2kg this week. Our iinet connection was installed today against all odds, which, YAY! But in the process the phone socket in the kitchen for our Optus cable land-line was sacrificed so now the answering machine/base station is plugged in to the socket in the study downstairs and we’re using one of our secondary handsets instead. I sold two necklaces last week, so there’s another 2008 goal ticked off. David and I went bowling on Sunday morning, my scores were 96 and 69, the symmetry is nice at any rate.
