School talent quest

This year I had two little performers doing their thing at the school talent quest, both of them practiced hard and both of them were fabulous (I may be a little biased here of course.) Tom was persuaded to sing without any music, here’s his rendition of the first half of “I Will Survive.” Click here if you can’t see the embedded video. Continue reading School talent quest

Gratitude

I am grateful for flexible working arrangements that allow Adam and I to take the following circumstances in our stride: Last night Adam went to the pub after work and left his car at work over-night.I was giving a talk about the P&C at kindy orientation this morning between 9:15 and 10:30am.Caitlin was attending a singing workshop as part of the Northern Sydney Region Enrichment Day for Gifted & Talented Students from 9:30am to 2:30pm at Bobbin Head about 25 minutes drive from our place.Adam dropped me and the boys at school and took Caitlin to the workshop where he … Continue reading Gratitude

Bootstraps, I has ’em

Now I just need to work out how to haul myself up by them. Some of you may have noticed a distinct lack of new content around these parts of late (go on, please say you’ve noticed?), poor old June has a mere 3 posts to its name! I think it’s time I did something about that, don’t you? It’s not like I haven’t had time really, there have been plenty of hours during which I have sat with my laptop on my knee and wandered around the blogosphere thinking to myself “I should post a comment there” or “ooo! … Continue reading Bootstraps, I has ’em

Sports carnivals make me think of poetry

It’s cross country carnival time tomorrow for my kids. Consequently David has a bad cold (every. single. year. he manages this, it’s a talent I tell you), Caitlin is busily making props for cheering while stressing out about the fact that she is slow despite her teacher’s assurances that small people are always the fast ones, and Tom has gone very quiet. I hated cross country running, my kids hate it and every year I struggle to toe the line of supporting the school and telling them they should join in. In point of fact I’ve got so bad at … Continue reading Sports carnivals make me think of poetry

Two weeks in the life of Mim

Em over at Shrinking Yoda has posted a look at her schedule over 2 weeks. Out of a kind of morbid curiosity I thought I’d do the same. The week just gone:9th – 15th March Mon – Take kids to school. Work at publishers. Pick up from school. Supervise homework. Cook dinner. Take Caitlin to Ballet. Adam brings his mum over for dinner. Adam goes to Sword training (usually with Dave but last week he stayed home.) Tues – Take kids to school. Take dog to dog park for quick play. Work at bookshop. Pick up kids. Supervise homework. Take … Continue reading Two weeks in the life of Mim

Snippets revisited

Caitlin’s a total drama queen so, yeah, she did have a bit of a difficult day but she gets over these things pretty quickly too. Thanks everyone for the kind words 🙂 The hat reappeared the next day, as I knew it would, I’m well trained in the clear labeling of kids clothes. Working in the Uniform shop at the school taught me that much, at the end of each year we’d get the unclaimed stuff from Lost Property to resell through the shop – so many things with no names in them! Lost Property is a peculiar repository in … Continue reading Snippets revisited

Snippets from the first week back at school

In the morning on the day the kids were placed in their classes David was pale-faced and anxious, dreading getting the deputy principal as his teacher. This very likely result did indeed eventuate which was not at all surprising as I had had conversations with the teachers at the end of last year in which we agreed that Mr M (who is a lovely person and, from what I’ve heard, a great teacher) would be the best option for Dave this year. David mock scowls at me, knowing I’ve had a hand in his fate. When I came to pick … Continue reading Snippets from the first week back at school

Someone should do something

Let me paint a picture for you. Your child is starting kindergarten next year. Perhaps this is your first child to be heading off to school, perhaps it’s your last, either way the kid is looking forward to it. You and your partner have got the school holiday child care juggling act all figured out and you’ve managed to arrange things so that you’ll be able to have the day off for the first day of term and one of you will be available to pick your child up each afternoon after school for at least the first week. After … Continue reading Someone should do something

I do not like public speaking

It’s not that I’m particularly bad at it, in fact people have been known to tell me I’m quite good at it. Unfortunately my body doesn’t seem to know that. I get incredibly tense, heart racing, can’t focus on things properly, really stressed and all the time I know I’m going to be perfectly fine but I feel like I’m about to do something hugely dangerous. It really sucks. (It’s also why I understand David’s anxiety issues, I don’t have the same degree of anxiety as him but I sure as hell know what it feels like.) So, of course, … Continue reading I do not like public speaking

I’m going to read to you whether you like it or not!

Today I spent the whole day feeling like nothing was working out quite the way it was supposed to. I had planned to give myself the morning off, once I’d dropped the kids at school I was going to come home and spend an hour and a half doing whatever I bloody well wanted to and then pop up to the school 30 minutes before my Canteen shift began to partake of the Helper’s Morning Tea – a thank you from the staff to all the parent who have helped out at the school throughout the year (I’ve never been … Continue reading I’m going to read to you whether you like it or not!
