What I’ve been reading

I think I’ll give up on the plan to review everything I read this year, turns out it’s not something I actually want to do. I do like the idea of keeping a record of what I’ve read though so you’re going to get lists with short comments instead. So here’s what I’ve read since posting my goals for the year back at the beginning of February. I went on a bit of a Lois McMaster Bujold binge and plowed my way through a re-read of The Vorkosigan saga starting with The Warriors Apprentice and following on with, in quick … Continue reading What I’ve been reading

Shakespeare for a bedtime story

Tonight at dinner Tom was telling us all about the things they are doing in drama class – Shakespeare no less! They’re doing A Midsummer-Night’s Dream and Tom has the part of Starveling the tailor, it boggles my mind just how this is going to work with a bunch of 7 year olds, how awesome is our drama teacher? (She is awesome, the kids love her and she gets great stuff out of them). We were discussing the story of the play over the meal and Dave and Cait were asking about what happens so I went and dug out … Continue reading Shakespeare for a bedtime story

First of my 2008 goals done!

I went to my first lampwork glass bead making lesson today and made 5 beads. Only 3 had cooled down enough to bring home at the end of the session though. Here they are. I’ve signed up for an 8 week course (the one ZB pointed out to me – thankyou!) so this is just the beginning, next thing you know I’ll be buying a gas torch and setting up at home 🙂 If I hadn’t posted this as a goal for this year I doubt I’d have got round to it for many months yet, if ever, and it … Continue reading First of my 2008 goals done!

Link-fest No.2

Fillyjonk at Shapely Prose has something to say about making the most of the body you’re living in now instead of waiting till you’re thin. John Scalzi has finished the manuscript for Zoe’s Tale shares some thoughts about the writing process. I found my way to yogabeans! via Fussy – surreal…. I recently discovered Pioneer Woman, she writes a pretty good love story, takes gorgeous photos and cooks with a truly terrifying amount of butter! Continue reading Link-fest No.2

The stuff of Christmas

The Advent calendar – my made-by-me, chocolate-free, re-usable felt wall hanging advent calendar, is no-where to be found. Seriously, I have no idea what I did with it. The tree – first haul it up from down in the garage, next find the box of decorations…realise the tinsel and lights are not in the box which you were SURE had everything in it…tell the kids they can’t decorate the tree till you find the lights…2 days later give up and let them decorate the tree anyway…if the lights and tinsel turn up we’ll worry about it then. Christmas cards – … Continue reading The stuff of Christmas

Three things

My daughter came out of her ballet class with tears in her eyes tonight because she “got a bit worried” when her teacher told the class she believed they would all be ready to move up from Grade 2 to Grade 3 next year. I pointed out that this was a good thing but Caitlin was not convinced. She’s been doing ballet for 5 years now but doesn’t believe she’s any good at it. This is the third year in a row that I’ve had this conversation. After much persuasion we’ve agreed to trust the teacher’s judgement, after all she’s … Continue reading Three things

Does marathon reading count?

Because I spent a good part of the weekend reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and the new Bujold fantasy (Sharing Knife: Legacy), of the 2 the Bujold was by far the more satisfying. Rowlings just doesn’t seem to make me care about her characters *shrug*. Saturday morning was taken up with our first training session with the Huscarls, they were very welcoming and much fun was had, especially by the kids who ran around like mad things beating each other up with rubber swords. We joined up officially and plan on getting involved in all the stuff they … Continue reading Does marathon reading count?
