Splash!

We went to the pool today, it’s not our closest public pool, there’s one at Hornsby too but this one at West Pymble is in such a lovely setting that it’s well worth a few extra minutes drive to go there instead. You can see what I mean from the Google satellite image This is the pool I used to come to for swimming lessons in the summer holidays when I was a kid, I have vivid memories of doing water safety and having to jump into the olympic pool fully dressed, tread water for a while and then swim … Continue reading Splash!

Adam missed seeing Santa – AGAIN!

Every single year it happens, just when Adam has had to duck out to run an errand or fix a problem, there’s the call of “Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry Christmas!” and this big guy in a silly red suit turns up at our Christmas party with a sack full of gifts for all the kids. Saturday afternoon was no different…. This year our Christmas party doubled as Adam’s 40th birthday party but slack buggers that we are there was no cake and we never actually sang Happy Birthday to him. Poor Adam, no Santa and no birthday song either. What … Continue reading Adam missed seeing Santa – AGAIN!

This weekend

We have: Demolished most of the kitchenette downstairs in the rumpus room (L-shaped bench and the cupboards underneath) to make room for the old entertainment unit. Now I just have to figure out what to do with all the crap that came out of the demolished cupboards. Moved the old entertainment unit (yeah, that bloody great thing ^) from the lounge room, out along the front path, down the precipitous driveway, through the garage into the backyard and then back in to the rumpus room. Moved two huge bookshelves to make space for a clothes rack in our bedroom. Shifted … Continue reading This weekend

Getting ready

I’ve spent the last few weeks responding to every hint of Christmas – decorations in shops, carol singing kids at the breakfast table, request from Adam for fruit mince pies (he ended up cooking his own) – by growling “it’s not December yet!” in true bah humbug fashion. But come Monday it will be December and that means there’s a whole bunch of Stuff To Do this weekend. As I mentioned, we’ve done barely any Christmas shopping, so tonight is list writing time and the plan is to be up and out bright and early tomorrow morning for a bit … Continue reading Getting ready

Plague!

I got nothing, have some giant microbes: Last November I got to day 22 before hitting the wall and fobbing you off with my shoe collection, I hate to think what depths I’ll be driven to in another week from now. I think what this collection has over the shoes is its undeniable cuteness, geek value and the therapeutic benefits of being able to throw small stuffed toys at one’s children while yelling “Plague! Mad Cow Disease! Flesh Eating Bacteria!” The kids have devised a complex game with specific rules for the use of each critter. Various diseases can only … Continue reading Plague!

Birthdays galore

Thursday was my birthday, I scored omelet for breakfast, a Dr Who calendar, Bill Bailey dvd, Goodies dvd, a couple of books of medieval tunes sheet music and the Spicks and Specks trivia game. I spent my day doing present shopping for Tom and having lunch with my mum and grandma. In the evening my mum and dad came with us for teppanyaki at Fujiya, which was entertaining and scrumptious, and there may have been some red bubbly and sav blanc involved. Good day 🙂 Today was Tom’s birthday, we celebrated by taking five of his friends to Sydney Wildlife … Continue reading Birthdays galore

Beorg-wic was fun

We spent the weekend at Beorg-wic which is the annual conference of the Ancient Arts Fellowship. It’s held at a site on the Danelaw property on the edge of the Moreton National Park near Braidwood. We were there with the Huscarls though only one other group member made it to the camp but everyone there was very welcoming and friendly so that was ok. The weather was marginal, we had a bit of rain each day so we were very pleased to be able to pack up with a dry tent! I wasn’t entirely expecting to be able to say … Continue reading Beorg-wic was fun

Spring has sprung and Summer is just around the corner

Tonight we celebrated the approaching warmer weather with something that has become a bit of a ritual in our house over the last few years. The exact date on which this ceremony will take place cannot be predicted, instead we must wait and watch for the signs to appear and with careful judgment pick just the right moment. The reward must be worthy of the sacrifice that will be made. There must be time set aside for proper appreciation. And what is this monumentous occasion? It is The First Mango of the Season. Now, it’s not like we grow these, … Continue reading Spring has sprung and Summer is just around the corner

Huscarls hillside camp

We went camping with the Huscarls on the weekend and to be perfectly honest I didn’t have much fun. I don’t mind roughing it a bit but I object very strongly to not having any flat ground to sleep on – sliding feet first off my bed multiple times through the night does not make me happy. There were other problems too but I don’t really feel like going into them here. Suffice to say I’ve had better weekends. Which isn’t to say there was nothing good about the weekend. The kids certainly had fun. The weather was good. Clara … Continue reading Huscarls hillside camp
