Walking down my front path

I came home this morning after doing the grocery shopping and as I staggered down the front path loaded with bags of dog food, pasta, snacks for the kids and the like I looked over into my garden and was seized with an urgent need to go get the camera. Kangaroo paw budding Tiny and pink Grevillea Prostrate grevillea – This does ground cover duty over much of the front yard. Another grevillea Tiny and purple Teeny tiny pink thing – Can you tell I’m completely clueless when it comes to plants? My garden makes me happy 🙂 Continue reading Walking down my front path

Good day

The beginning of my day: Adam has been making me awesome breakfasts for almost 20 years, this morning I said I was craving pancakes and bacon and eggs. I got up, had my shower, got dressed…et voilà! The middle of my day: I took Caitlin shopping. She ended up with FOUR pairs of shoes. They were: school shoes which cost a bloody fortune, long black boots at 25% off bought slightly big in the hope they’ll be good for next winter and 2 pairs of crappy flats from Kmart which cost $5.60 a pair and will probably do horrible things … Continue reading Good day

It doesn’t take much to make me happy

Caitlin has not had a particularly easy learning to read experience. Although she does love to have books read to her and will happily browse through non-novel type books of various types I’ve rarely seen her settle down with one and read for a significant length of time and she has read very few chapter books. This afternoon Caitlin came out of class clutching a book and began enthusiastically telling me all about it. The book in question was The Magic Faraway Tree. I asked where she’d got it as it didn’t look like a library book, turns out it’s … Continue reading It doesn’t take much to make me happy

Planning ahead

When I turned 6 on the 23rd of October in 1976 I got one of the best birthday presents I’ve ever had. The sun hid behind the moon. I remember being so excited. We made pinhole cameras and my dad explained what was going to happen. We even went on holidays to somewhere further south in order to be closer to the path of the totality (I can’t remember where and it’s too late to call mum and ask). I have a vivid memory of sitting in the car watching the dot of light in my pinhole camera being slowly … Continue reading Planning ahead

Today in photos

Tom played soccer this morning. We sat on the front deck enjoying the sunshine. David hunted siblings And then we went on a picnic with my mum AND Adam’s mum, took Clara to a dog park for the first time (she was in HEAVEN), played basketball with the kids, and completely failed to take a single photo. It’s been a particularly awesome sort of day 🙂 Continue reading Today in photos

Things I want to try cooking.

What we have here is a bunch of stuff that I’ve been wanting to try my hand at for, in most cases, a very long time. Perhaps if I list them here I might even make some of them eventually. Soft pretzels – because OMG YUM! Mozzarella Fresca – I think this would be such an awesome thing to do with the kids, beats going to a cheese factory to learn about cheese making. Beef jerky – there are lots of recipes around, many of them seem to be characterised by a certain vagueness with instructions such as “add some … Continue reading Things I want to try cooking.

Stuff that made me happy this week

The canteen supervisor told me she enjoys reading my contributions to the school newsletter because I write well. Who knew anyone cared about the literary merits of school newsletters? The rain held off till 3pm on Family Fun Day at the school last Sunday. Family Fun Day is the P&C’s major fundraising event of the year complete with rides, stalls, performances by dance groups and bands – the works, and each year we dread being rained out. Caitlin sang beautifully at Family Fun Day. They asked the talent quest winners from last year to perform, she didn’t repeat her Under … Continue reading Stuff that made me happy this week

Adam and I had been trying to think of things to do with the kids…

…and then I followed a link on Blue milk’s blog to Gever Tulley giving a brief talk on the topic of 5 dangerous things you should let your kids do. Now we’re positively full of ideas! http://static.videoegg.com/ted/flash/loader.swf I emailed the link to the video to Adam and he replied thusly: Perhaps we could do all at the same time, I have an old laptop. We couldgive them a pocket knife they could use it to disassemble the laptop whileit is on fire and ripping music, in the passenger seat of the MPV….. See? Fun for all the family 🙂 Seriously … Continue reading Adam and I had been trying to think of things to do with the kids…

Shakespeare for a bedtime story

Tonight at dinner Tom was telling us all about the things they are doing in drama class – Shakespeare no less! They’re doing A Midsummer-Night’s Dream and Tom has the part of Starveling the tailor, it boggles my mind just how this is going to work with a bunch of 7 year olds, how awesome is our drama teacher? (She is awesome, the kids love her and she gets great stuff out of them). We were discussing the story of the play over the meal and Dave and Cait were asking about what happens so I went and dug out … Continue reading Shakespeare for a bedtime story

For once the avocado was perfect

The meal planning thing has been working quite well this week as far as the dinners go, I may as well not have bothered planning my lunches though, I don’t think I followed it once all week for lunch. I swapped the tacos for spag bol on Thursday and had the presence of mind to pop the avocado in the fridge rather than leaving it on the fruit bowl. When I cut into it tonight in great trepidation I was mightily surprised to be greeted with a perfectly ripened, unblemished and completely delicious fruit – I must have been channeling … Continue reading For once the avocado was perfect
