Beorg-wic and birthday party reporting

Here we are at the end of two weeks of school holidays and I feel absolutely wiped out. Not because having the kids around has worn thin, they seem to have grown up enough for that not to be such a problem any more. Rather it’s because I’ve spent pretty much the whole 2 weeks with a horrible lurgi. Same thing happened to me last school holidays too. I feel cheated. All I can say is it’s a damn good thing that being a Dark Ages reenactor doesn’t require you to give up paracetamol and anti-histamines as well as plumbing … Continue reading Beorg-wic and birthday party reporting

Caitlin

You are my daughter. I carried you inside me…and was violently ill for weeks on end (thanks very much). You were born in an entirely civilized fashion at 9:15 on a Sunday evening and then proceeded to ignore civilized timing of pretty much anything for many months. So, perfectly normal baby really. We even had your cot in the lounge room for a while and would retreat to our bedroom of an evening so that you wouldn’t disturb your brother when it was time for bed. In the end we gave in and kicked daddy out of his study to … Continue reading Caitlin

It’s been a long day

You know how I said I might try ice-skating today? Well, I did. I was really apprehensive because I had memories from the last time I tried, years ago, of being so distressed that all I wanted to do was hide somewhere and cry. I remembered that my feet had been in agony but I couldn’t remember what it had been like on the ice. Was I still able to skate (I used to go regularly for sport in high-school and had taken lessons when I lived in the US) or was it just an exercise in frustration and humiliation? … Continue reading It’s been a long day

Planning ahead

When I turned 6 on the 23rd of October in 1976 I got one of the best birthday presents I’ve ever had. The sun hid behind the moon. I remember being so excited. We made pinhole cameras and my dad explained what was going to happen. We even went on holidays to somewhere further south in order to be closer to the path of the totality (I can’t remember where and it’s too late to call mum and ask). I have a vivid memory of sitting in the car watching the dot of light in my pinhole camera being slowly … Continue reading Planning ahead

This was much easier than making a dragon cake

Dave’s 11th birthday party was a big success, the boys all had a great time playing Dungeons and Dragons. I was by no means sure that it would work out today as none of them had ever played before, but all went well under Adam’s expert GM-ing and by the time we were half-way through the session they were all asking when they could come back and play again. Actually, I enjoyed it too, it’s many years since I last played any RPGs, I hope this will be the start of regular games. My level 1 thief did quite nicely … Continue reading This was much easier than making a dragon cake

Designed by David

Back in October I ended my birthday post with the promise of photos. So it’s next month rather than tomorrow…close enough 😛 Here’s what I wanted to share, my present from David, designed and made by him with some input from Tom (Tom chose the big bead in the centre) to go with a new top I’d just bought. I did need to make it a little longer as the first version ended up with an extension chain and the wire ends were scratching the back of my neck so tonight, with David’s approval, I re-strung it on a longer … Continue reading Designed by David

Weigh-in week 13

I managed a loss of 0.9kg this week which brings me back to 8.5kg lost. I’m going to stick with Core for a couple more weeks at least, I’m feeling much more relaxed about my eating so it seems to be working quite well for now. I was at the school for half the day today. I’m getting a bit sick of that place 😛 I’m there most of tomorrow too but Thursday I get all to myself and I’m planning on doing some Christmas shopping so I’ve been working on my gift list, it’s hard! I need inspiration. Anyone … Continue reading Weigh-in week 13

Weigh-in week 10

I gained 1.9kg this week, but at least half of that was the yummy birthday breakfast cooked for me by Adam. I’ve switched to core and I’m happy to say I had no trouble what-so-ever staying on track today. I ate well, drank about 2.5L of water and walked from one end to the other of Hornsby Westfield several times over. Feels like a good start to the week. More birthday reports tomorrow, I need to take a photo or two! Continue reading Weigh-in week 10

Tom’s 6th birthday party

On Sunday I braced myself and opened my house to 4 extra 6 year olds! The horror! I’m such a wuss when it comes to kids’ parties, I stress and I don’t enjoy them, but the kids seem to have fun so I must be doing something right. As usual my very wonderful mother was there to help out. There were presents – and a silly big brother. We decorated lolly boxes – a very serious business. And ate party food – mmmm suuugaaar. The end. Actually there was pass-the-parcel, beat up the daddy-viking (who was wearing a woolen tunic … Continue reading Tom’s 6th birthday party
